Have you ever been to a park where you could admire millions of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths, all planted in beautiful color compositions? I’m talking about the Keukenhof in Lisse in the Netherlands, the most beautiful spring park in the world. This is the place where bulb companies from all over the Netherlands show off their flowers. There are for example 800 different kinds of tulips.
The Keukenhof is only open to public in the spring, when the flowers are blooming. They’re usually open from the end of march until the beginning of may. The park is most beautiful in the last week of april, because that’s usually when all the different kinds of flowers are blooming. And the best time to visit the Keukenhof if you don’t take a tour is after 4pm. Most tourist busses leave before 5pm, so you’ll avoid the big tourist crowds.
One thing I would definitely advice you: get yourself a map when you enter the park. It’s a huge park and it’s pretty easy to get lost, because there are a lot of winding paths. It takes about 2 hours to walk around the park if you take your time. There are multiple food stalls and small restaurants around the park as well, so if you want to take a break from all the walking and gain some more energy, that’s also possible (try the poffertjes if you haven’t yet).
And not only are there many beautiful flowers, there is also flower art! Fashion designers have made dresses and shoes inspired by flowers and there’s always at least one big flower mosaic. There are also some animals to see in the park, like different kinds of birds, bunnies and goats.
A full priced ticket to the park costs €16,00. Children under 12 are €8,00 and children under 3 are free. To get there, take the train to Schiphol airport and then take the bus to the Keukenhof (bus 858), which leaves every half hour. And one small note for people with allergies like hay fever: don’t forget to take your medicine! I forgot to take mine and I can’t count how many times I’ve had to sneeze.
