Why Barcelona is great for any kind of city trip – Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona has everything you could ever want from a city trip. Do you love football? Or are you more into shopping? Or maybe you’re looking for a city with lots of art and intersting architecture. All of this can be found in Barcelona.

Art
Barcelona has both a Picasso museum and a Joan Miró museum, so if you like these artists, these museums are the place to be. There is also a museum about Gaudi’s work in Parc Güell. The Museu d’Història de Barcelona has a great collection of older artpieces, even some Roman art. In this museum, you can also view the remains of an ancient Roman factory and it has a beautiful gothic altarpiece from the 15th century.

Architecture
Barcelona is of course mostly famous for its nineteenth-century architecture designed by Gaudi. You could admire Casa Batllo, Casa Milà and of course the famous Sagrada Família. However, there are many beautiful constructions from other era’s as well. The Església de Santa Maria del Mar is a beautiful Gothic church in the city centre, but there are also a few beautiful modern constructions in Barcelona, like the Torre Agbar. I also really liked the Palau de la Música Catalana, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The building has beautiful mosaïcs on the outside and an amazing stained glass ceiling on the inside!

Football
Camp Nou is the huge football stadium that is the home of FC Barcelona. You can visit Camp Nou and get a tour through the stadium and see the FC Barcelona museum. You could even buy tickets to go see a football game here. The stadium is a must-see for football fans!

Parks
The most famous park in Barcelona is Parc Güell. It was also designed by Gaudi and contains a lot of his mosaïc artworks, like the dragon, ‘el drac’ and the long mosaïc bench. This is also a perfect place to sit down for a while and relax, as long as you don’t sit down next to the dragon statue, because that spot is loaded with tourists. Try walking a little further into the park and you will have a much quieter spot with great views of Barcelona. Here are some more tips for visiting Parc Güell.

Food & Drinks
Barcelona is a great place to indulge in famous Spanish food and drinks. Try as many tapas as you like and if you love seafood, this city is also a great place for you. Of course the Spanish drink you have to try is Sangria, red wine with fruit juice. If you are shopping for food, you should definitely go to the Mercat de la Boqueria, a huge market next to the Ramblas where you can buy lots of fresh food.

Beach
Barcelona is right next to the beach, so if you are there on a warm sunny day and you’re tired of walking around in the city, you can just hit the beach! It is easy to reach the beach with the subway and it’s usually safe to swim in the sea. The beaches right next to the city are usually a bit crowded, so if you want to go to a quieter beach, you will have to travel a little further to a beach that is further away from the city centre.

Shopping
Passeig de Gràcia is the shopping street in Barcelona where you can find the most expensive brands, like Chanel and Luis Vuitton, but also some more affordable shops like H&M and Zara. These shops can also be found on the busiest shopping street: the Portal de l’Àngel. In the shopping mall Boulevard Rosa you can find some smaller boutiques.

Nightlife
Barcelona is a lovely city to walk around at night. People are on the streets until late in the evening and it’s lovely to take a walk on the Ramblas (be careful though, there are lots of pickpockets as well). Another great thing to do at night in Barcelona is to go see the Font Màgica, a beautiful illuminated fountain. A few times every evening, there is a short light show with music, which is great to see.
