What to see and do in Hammamet – Hammamet, Tunisia

Hammamet is a great place for a beach holiday. It’s around 30°C in the summer and there’s often a light breeze, so it doesn’t get too muggy. Hammamet is a coastal town in the northeast of Tunisia and it’s Tunisia’s most popular tourist destination. In fact, the population of the town quadruples during the summertime, because there are so many tourists arriving. If you’re planning to go to this lovely beach town this summer, here are some tips on what to see and do.

Hit the beach
Of course! You’re in a beach town. This town is famous for its beaches. Naturally, you’re going to have a look at the beach. You’re not going to be the idiot that I was by not going to the beach in Hammamet, right? We did have a room with a view of the beach though, which was really beautiful. But I still regret not going for a swim in that gorgeous blue sea.

Take a stroll through the port
Hammamet has a beautiful port called Port Yasmine Hammamet. We went for a walk there in the evening, which was really nice, but I think it would also be fun to go for a walk in the late afternoon. There are some shops nearby and there are also some nice restaurants. And if you like boats, then of course this is the place to be for you.

1

Take a boat trip
Now that we’re talking about boats, there are many fun boat trips you can book in Hammamet. There are romantic cruises for couples or pirate boats if you’d like to take a boat trip with children. We often saw the pirate boat sailing by when we were sitting on our balcony.

Go shopping at the medina
Test your haggling skills at the medina of Hammamet. You can find all kinds of souvenirs here and the prices are not fixed, so you can try to get a great bargain. The best I’ve heard was a guy that got the price down from 120 dinars to only 10! We bought a beautiful chess board here and some sunburn, because I forgot to bring mine.

Take a day trip
It’s pretty easy to visit Tunis, Sidi Bou Said, Carthage or Sousse from Hammamet and because there are so many tourists, there are also many companies that offer day trips to these cities. You can also book many activities through these companies, like a jeep safari or quad biking.

Relax by the pool
Most hotels in Hammamet have a pool, so if you came here to just relax for a few days, grab a good book or a magazine and get a tan. Make sure you bring a small tip for the lifeguard and he will make sure you will get an excellent spot.
